IGOR FURTADO - THERE'S NO SIN TO THE SOUTH OF ECUADOR

[BRAZIL 2019]

The film presents the encounter of two young Christians during the festivities of Círio de Nazaré in Belém do Pará, the largest catholic procession in Latin America. The intention was to try to displace and question the idea of sacrifice, which etymologically means sacred work and is perpetuated as a purifying act. In addition, we think about how the construction of hegemonic masculinity is not intrinsically linked to a colonizing inheritance.

MASHA VLASOVA - CHEKHOV'S MASHA'S MASHA

[RUSSIA 2015]

“In ‘Chekhov’s Masha’s Masha’ I read a short monologue by a character named Masha, in Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull. The play is about actors, writers, theater, the torments of the creative process. It is a play imported from and therefore about Russia. I take up Masha’s monologue as a found text, interpreting it as a Russian, an American, an actress, a director, and a Masha.”

DAT VU - MUTED CONVERSATIONS

[VIETNAM 2017]

Muted Conversations explore the spirituality and superstitions surrounding rituals in Vietnam, including both staged and candid images taken during my extensive travels across the country. These images reveal how Vietnamese people, across diverse regions, perform rites and rituals in sacred spaces and in daily life; these photographs hint at the subliminal differences between rural and urban life; between public and private space; between understanding myself as observers, voyeurs or provocateurs. 'Muted Conversations' aims to address the significance of traditional cultural practices as Vietnam rapidly transitions into a new era. How do people adapt and incorporate these practices into different aspects of their life? What is their understanding towards the different systems of beliefs and values that overlap with one another? And where do we find our identity in this flux of historical legacies and contemporary movements? While these questions refer to a collective mindset, the observations stay within my personal context.
